For a refund process to begin, one fills out the Form 8849, which is known as the “Claim for a Refund of Excise Taxes” followed by dispatching to the IRS. Form 8849 enables taxpayers to seek a repayment of the HVUT on a vehicle that qualifies. The following information must be provided:

  • VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)
  • Month and year or the month and year in which the car was uninsured.
  • Tax that has been reported.
  • Evidence or papers endorsing the claims for either sale or lesser usage.

Filling a Claim

  • Fill out Form 8849: This involves filling the form, checking on necessary warnings to ascertain all the information provided is correct as required.
  • Send to the IRS: This, in essence, entails sending the complete form to IRS via priority mail or filing the form electronically for a quicker turnaround.
  • Wait for Process: What comes next is the verification of the said refund and should it be approved, an IRS issued check will be forwarded to the concerned party.

Estimated Period for Refunds

The IRS takes not more than eight (8) weeks for the Form 8849. And matters may be better when the claimant e-files the form as the process can be quicker. You should also monitor your refund and contact them where necessary.

Form 2290 is also understood by truck owners who are likely to benefit from tax refunds. If you sold a vehicle or had it in limited use for some time, filing the Form 8849 will ensure that you get back any excess taxes paid.
